Denim Day
Denim Day: April 24, 2024
This national event was spurred by a 1998 Italian Supreme Court Case where a student was raped by her driving instructor. While initially convicted, the perpetrator appealed the decision and got the ruling overturned. The Chief Judge stated, “...because the victim wore very, very tight jeans, she had to help him remove them, and by removing the jeans it was no longer rape but consensual sex.” This sparked a movement in Italy, which then went national and then international, with people wearing jeans to work in protest.
Denim day is a chance to raise awareness and donate to an organization that supports individuals who have been impacted by violence. Please consider donating to Ampersand: Sexual Violence Resource Center of the Bluegrass and engage in the movement to end violence and support survivors! Prior to April 24th, Donate on Ampersand's website here.
Then, on April 24th, post pictures of you in your jeans and tell us why you wear jeans and #SupportSurvivors. By wearing jeans you make the statement that you support survivors and oppose a victim-blaming mentality.
